Nikolai was married to Dunya Makaroff. They and had four daughters, Mabel born in 1912, Annie born in 1914, Dora born in 1919 and Marge born in 1923.
P. V. Verigin nicknamed him “Tsar” because of his exceptional qualities in character and his ability to handle horses. Verigin also gave him a gift of a saddle and a gold watch.
